Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the Image of older adults and ageism among university students. This study specifically aims to look at the differences in the image of older adults and ageism in relation to different age and gender groups of older adults.
It also discusses ways to positively change the image of older adults held by individuals in the university student generation and to reduce ageism by studying the variables that affect them. For this, 435 university students were surveyed nationwide. The following methods were performed for descriptive analysis: t-test, ANOVA and regression analysis. According to the obtained results, university student have a more positive image of older adults and lower levels of ageism for older adults of the same gender. They also show a more positive image of older adults and lower levels of ageism for younger groups than for older groups. In addition, the image of older adult and ageism differed depending on experience with tolder adults, lectures related to older adults, and satisfaction with volunteering to work with older adults. Based on these results, this study suggests that education or mass media content is needed for the university students to receive information that more objectively reflects the position of older adults in modern society. These results also suggest that increasing contact opportunities between university students and older adults can reduce negative perceptions and discrimination of older adults.
